LaToya’s journey into the barbering world began when she learned to cut her younger cousin’s hair. “He was in my care and needed a haircut for high school. I didn’t have the money for regular haircuts, so I bought some clippers and started cutting his hair,” she reminisces.
Fueled by her passion for mastering the art of barbering, LaToya began to sharpen her skills by cutting hair for others in her local neighborhood from the comfort of her home. However, unexpectedly LaToya was abruptly forced to stop her in-house services when someone reported that she was running a barbershop without proper licensing to the authorities. Without an official price list, she managed to avoid any severe consequences.
“Someone told the state that I was cutting everyone’s hair in the neighborhood. That incident pushed me to attend barber school and earn my license. And then, after receiving my barber license, I stayed in barber school to obtain my instructor license.”
LaToya Medina has offered budget-friendly full-scale barber services to the people of the greater Joliet area for nearly two decades. Her dedication to helping others grew even more during the Covid-19 pandemic, leading her to establish All About U Barber School. Despite people doubting her ability to start a school amidst global chaos caused by the pandemic, she moved forward to pursue her dream and succeeded.
“People kept saying I couldn’t do it because of the pandemic. People will always say you can’t do something. But it’s about how determined you are to achieve what you want, and I was determined. So, I took a leap of faith and opened the school during the pandemic, and we’ve been here ever since.”
At All About U Barber College, students have found inspiration and guidance under LaToya’s mentorship. Brandon, a current student shares, “LaToya has taught me so much about the industry. She’s the only school willing to work with me and accommodate my schedule. I own a beauty salon, and LaToya is helping me bring barbering to the salon.
Jekwon, under LaToya’s direction, learned the art of cutting hair and retwisting locs. “Toya is a real person. She tells you like it is,” he says appreciatively.
Courtney, who’s been with All About U Barber School for a year and a half, says he’s learned a lot from Toya. “I got into the barber business for entrepreneurship,” he shares, “and Toya has taught a lot about cutting hair and the barber business.”
Creal, who joined the school eight 8-months ago, plans on using the skills she’s learned to obtain her barber license to help pay for college. “Being here is cool!” Creal exclaims. “Before I came here, I just knew how to line. Now I’m able to do fades, tapers, and different styles. I even became a better braider.”

All About U is a relaxing and secure barbershop across from Super Mercados El Guero on Theodore Street in Joliet. Parking is convenient, and LaToya has to buzz you in to enter the building. She says this is her way of providing a safe environment for her students, barbers, and customers.
The inside is modern decor with plenty of space. The students were doing various tasks, but once LaToya began to line up my beard, they gathered around to watch and ask questions. It was the first time someone other than myself lined up my beard, but I left All About U Barber Lounge and College feeling and looking good. All About U do accept walk-ins, but booking an appointment via Booksy is encouraged.
Overall I’d recommend All About U Barber Lounge and College. I plan making it my go to spot for all my barber needs.
