Routine inspections of the Interstate 80 bridge over the Des Plaines River in Joliet are set to begin Monday, May 11, weather permitting, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The work will require daily lane closures on both bridges, starting with the eastbound lanes through May 18. Crews will then move to the westbound bridge, with inspections expected to wrap up by May 23, barring weather delays.

Closures will take place during daytime hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Saturday work may be scheduled if needed to stay on track. Officials said at least one lane in each direction will remain open throughout the project.

Drivers traveling through the area should expect delays, especially during midday hours. Transportation officials are urging motorists to allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes when possible.
Work zones will include flaggers, signage, and reduced speed limits. Drivers are advised to stay alert, follow posted instructions, and watch for workers and equipment along the roadway.

The inspections are part of ongoing efforts to maintain and improve infrastructure along the I-80 corridor in Will County.
The corridor is a key component of the state’s long-term transportation plan under Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois program.
