Gas Prices in Joliet Surge As Global Conflict Disrupts Oil Prices.
JOLIET, IL. — Gas prices continue to climb across Joliet and Will County, with some drivers now paying more than $5 per gallon, as global tensions tied to the war involving Iran disrupt oil markets and ripple through the broader economy.
Local drivers report prices as high as $5.07 per gallon, significantly above recent county averages. The increase reflects a combination of global supply concerns, market volatility, and seasonal changes in fuel production.
Crude oil prices have climbed above $100 per barrel, driven in part by instability tied to the Iran conflict and fears of disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route responsible for moving roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.
AAA warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could continue to impact prices.
“Expect elevated oil and gas prices as long as the conflict… and tankers are stalled,” a spokesperson for AAA said. “When crude oil prices shoot up, pump prices follow suit.”

The current threat to that corridor creates immediate pressure on global oil markets. Even the risk of reduced flow has pushed prices higher, increasing the cost of gasoline production and distribution in the United States.
Financial markets have reacted to the uncertainty. Major stock indexes have experienced volatility in recent weeks as investors weigh the impact of rising energy costs and geopolitical instability. Energy sector stocks have generally moved higher alongside oil prices, while broader markets have faced pressure amid concerns about inflation and consumer spending.
AAA officials say the surge of prices is also directly tied to rising oil costs. In addition to global conflict, several domestic factors are contributing to higher gas prices:
- Transition to more expensive summer-blend gasoline
- Illinois motor fuel taxes, among the highest in the Midwest
- Increased seasonal travel demand
In Joliet and surrounding communities, gas prices vary by location, with higher costs often found near major highways like Interstate 55 and Route 30. Stations in high-traffic areas tend to adjust prices more quickly, pushing some locations above the $5 threshold for premium and above $4 for regular unleaded.
The Joliet City Council approved an increase in the local fuel tax in December 2024 as part of the 2025 budget, raising it to 5 cents per gallon for regular gasoline and 11 cents for diesel. This hike, aimed at supporting city vehicle replacements and budget needs, follows a previous 3-cent increase enacted in 2020.
For Joliet residents, the impact is immediate—higher gas prices, rising delivery costs, and increased strain on household and business budgets as global events continue to influence local expenses.
USPS Adds Temporary Shipping Surcharge
Rising fuel costs are also impacting shipping. The United States Postal Service has announced a temporary 8% price increase on competitive shipping services to offset higher transportation expenses.
The surcharge will take effect April 26, 2026, and remain in place through Jan. 17, 2027, applying to:
